Calling for urgent action, the WHO Global Action Plan for COPD 2016–2020 lays out a series of five pillars on which it hopes COPD can be reduced and the disease’s impact on patients and healthcare systems addressed. The prevention pillar focuses on prevention by bringing together resources and disciplines from different sectors, targeting all aspects of the social and economic environment that can influence the risk of developing COPD and contribute to its management. Today, the disease is the third most common cause of death in the world, according to the World Health Organization. The final pillar of the Global Action Plan aims to support countries developing national plans and measures to reduce the burden of COPD, while the fifth and final pillar aims to promote public awareness of COPD and early disease detection and treatment. In the Asia-Pacific region, COPD is the 10th leading cause of death and is responsible for over 3.6 million deaths annually. With the exception of Japan, the countries with the highest death rates are in the region. Indonesia, China and India are home to 24, 15 and 14 million COPD patients, respectively. COPD is also the most common cause of death in the 22 Asian countries covered by the WHO’s action plan for COPD. According to the WHO, one of the major challenges in combating COPD is identifying and addressing risk factors, since such factors are more common than the disease itself. These include environmental pollution, tobacco smoke exposure, dietary factors and occupational exposures. However, approximately half of COPD patients are aware of their disease and seek healthcare, indicating that improved recognition of the disease is also required. “In the initial phase of a COPD disease, as it progresses, patients are at high risk of exacerbations, which are more severe and cause increased mortality,” explains Jayabalan Sundararajan, PhD, WHO Regional Director for the Western Pacific Region, who’s opening keynote presentation at IPF2018 is focused on the link between COPD and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). “The
